FoalGuard Foaling Alarm
Information
Monitor your mare from the comfort of your home.
Non invasive to your mare.
The FoalGuard Alarm lets you know when your mare lays down in the foaling position so you can be there if assistance is needed.
When your mare lays down in the foaling position a signal is sent, after a short delay, from the transmitter (fitted to the halter) to the receiver (positioned in the home), activating an audible alarm.
This alarm can also be used as a colic alert or for any animal that can wear a halter and lays down to give birth.
FoalGuard foaling alarms are also equipped with a 10 second delay to help prevent the alarm from being triggered when the mare rolls or scratches.
Long transmission range
FoalGuard foaling alarms are rated at *3000meters (3280yrds or 9,840 feet) in open air with no obstructions.
*As with any wireless product they work to optimal distance only when there are no obstructions or interference, the more obstructions the shorter the distance the signal can travel. We have a repeater available for areas where there are too many obstructions and for extra long distance
We can only give a description of working distance and it will vary for every property.
The distance they will work depends on what is between the transmitter and the receiver, i.e., Walls, barns, buildings, trees, tall grass, fences. Our transmitters will go through most obstructions very well. But undulation of the ground, i.e., hills and hollows will restrict the signal the most. To give you an example, testing on our property with the standard indoor aerial from our back pasture and going through 1 house wall, 2 large barns/sheds, several fences and a 150 foot tall bank of pine trees plus other smaller obstructions, has shown they will work consistently to over 300meters (328 yrds or 984 feet). This is one tenth of the rated range. So the clearer the area between the transmitter and receiver the better the distance you will get.
The Base station (receiver) comes with a 3.6m cable so you can mount the aerial outside to improve the distance if needed.
We also have repeaters available for properties that have too many obstructions or need extra distance. The repeater can be plugged into your mains power or run from a 12 volt battery. The repeater comes enclosed in a weather resistant case and when positioned correctly will dramatically increase the range. Please contact us if you need help to determining if you need a repeater or not.
The FoalGuard Base station (receiver)
The base station comes standard with Power
on/off switch
(with small led light to indicate power on/off)
1 alarm mode switch
(audio on/off)
1 sleep switch
(Activates a 30 minute timer before the alarm will become active)
3 signal lights
(one for sleep mode, one for alarm on/off, one for power on/off)
1 x 17cm aerial
(mounts on top of the case or can be mounted outside with cable provided)
1 x Aerial cable
The Base station runs from a 12v power adapter which plugs directly into your mains power or can be run from a 12v battery (battery lead extra)
When the Base station receives a signal from the transmitter it will sound a 70 decibel alarm to alert you that the mare has laid down.
Sleep Switch
The Sleep switch is for when your mare lays down to sleep you can press the sleep switch which activates a timer (approx 30 minutes) before the alarm will become audible again. (Most horses will not sleep for longer than 30 minutes on their side.) so you don't have to wait for her to get up before turning the alarm back on, which means more sleep and less stress for you. There is an over-ride, if the sleep switch is pressed by accident. The alarm light will stay on until your mare gets up.
Activation Alert
This is a new feature. When the mare activates the alarm a signal light is activated, this lets you know if the mare has layed down even if you have been away from the alarm. This signal light will stay on until it is manualy switched switched off.
Transmitter and pouch
The FoalGuard transmitter fits easily and securely with Velcro to any standard halter, mini to full size. Please only use standard halters as the transmitters will not sit correctly on rope halters or halters with sliding jaw straps and this may cause false alarms.
The Transmitter, including the pouch only weighs 170 grams . Pouches come in Bright Blue orFunky Purple ripstop nylon or a heavy duty blue canvas, Please advise us of your choice.
A small enclosed aerial attaches with Velcro neatly on the inside of the poll strap of the halter this can be removed if you find you do not need it and it will break away as a safety measure if the mare catches it on a fence or tree. The kit comes with 1 aerial. Replacement aerials can be ordered from our web site or by contacting us.
If you have more than one mare to monitor, you can use as many transmitters as you like.
Additional transmitters can be ordered on request
Battery power and transmission distance
The biggest cause of failures in foaling alarms is low battery
power. The lower the battery power the less distance the signal can travel.
If a foaling alarm's battery becomes too low it may not have enough strength
to transmit the signal to the base station (receiver).
Some foaling alarms run on very low power and the batteries will last for a greater time, but by doing this they sacrifice the transmission distance they can work.
If you relate a foaling alarm to a TV remote control. Under
normal use a TV remote is only used for a few seconds and the battery will
last for months.
But if you held the TV remote on, it would only last for a few hours
The same applies to a foaling alarm, the more a mare lays down to sleep, the
faster the battery will drain.
Every mare is different and some lay down to sleep much more
than others.
To avoid battery failure use a good quality alkaline battery or better and
check your battery often, using a multimeter or battery testing device available
at most electronic stores. Never use a rechargeable battery as the useful
life will be far less than a good quality non rechargeable battery.
Warranty and repairs
2 year repair or replace warranty on parts and labour (warranty
excludes transmitter pouch)
We understand that in the event of any failure, your mare will not wait for
a foaling alarm to be repaired or replaced before she has her foal
We will do our best to service any warranty or repair as fast as possible.
