Predicts when your mare is likely to foal

One of the most stressful things about foaling is the nightly vigils to check your expectant mare, especially when you have to work the next day. I think anyone who has been in contact with foaling mares would know the story of 'My mare waxed up today, she should foal very soon'. Two weeks later your walking around like a zombie with blood shot eyes saying, she'll foal any day now.

50 simple milk tests that can save you allot of sleepless nights and improve the chances of being there when your foal is born.

How they work is simple, you take a small sample of your mares milk and mix it with distilled water. Dip a test pad into the mixture, the pad will change colour. You then match the pads colour to the six coloured squares on the chart.

Start testing 3 weeks before your mares due date or if you do not know the due date, then start testing when your mare is showing signs of bagging up or is producing enough milk for you to take a sample.

Test once per day (evening is best) until you reach the 4th coloured square, then start testing twice daily (morning and night).

If you get a match to any of the first 3 squares, statistically there is a 98% probability that your mare will not foal in the next 24 hours, so it is highly unlikely your foal will appear any time soon, so you can get some sleep.

If your pad matches the 4th square you are getting closer but still unlikely that there will be a foal in the next 24 hours.

If the pad is getting very close to, or has reached the 5th square, your foal should arrive any time within the next 72 hours.

If you get to the last square (most mares foal before you get to the last square), I wouldn't go too far away, as your likely to go make coffee and come back to find a foal.

More than 90% of mares will foal within 24 hours once you reach the 5th square.

While the tests work very well, they are meant as an aid to good horse husbandry and careful physical observations of your mare.

They can help, give you a indication of when your mare may foal, but they do not work for 100% of mares.

Approximately 3% of mares can give false readings or no reading at all.

Maiden mares seem to be the most unpredictable. Tests may also not work properly on mares with a severe nutritional imbalance or are very ill.

If for any reason you think there is something wrong, your mare may be having trouble foaling or has gone past her due date seek veterinary advice right away.

Test pads must be stored at a stable room temperature, open the bottle only when necessary and keep cap on tight between uses.
