Hints on how to collect urine from your mare

You don't have to wait around for hours for your mare to urinate.

There are, less time consuming and also very clever ways to collect urine.

Horses urinate about once every 6 hours. Unless you know the habits of your mare, it can be tricky catching her urinating so that you can collect a sample for pregnancy testing by 'Wee-Foal-Checker' .

By far the simplest method used is to tape a sanitary pad, nappy or some other absorbent item below the vulva of the mare, the absorbent item can then be removed and the urine squeezed out ready for testing.

Some mares are very obliging, and will urinate predictably after exercise or feeding, or being put on or taken off a float .

Some mares can often be encouraged to urinate by putting them in a stable with fresh straw. Some mares will urinate after they have been 'whistled' at.

It is not necessary to collect the urine sample directly into a container as it is being voided. If you see your mare urinating onto the ground, the urine can still be collected by placing absorbent material (e.g. a paper towel) onto it, and squeezing the urine out into a clean container for subsequent testing by 'Wee-Foal-Checker'. a wee bit of dirt will not effect the test, this method may prove ineffective if the ground is very wet from recent rain which may dilute the urine to much to take an accurate test.

Another very reliable method to collect urine is to attach a collection device to the mare. One such device, invented by breeder Gill Booth from KeriKeri, attaches to the mare's cover (horse rug). The device is simple, inexpensive and easy to make, and generally undetected by the mare. A picture of Gill's device is shown below.

Placing some absorbent material in the collection container is also useful, as this prevents all the collected urine splashing out when your mare runs up to greet you! Again the urine can be squeezed out of the absorbent material into a sample container for 'Wee-Foal-Checker' testing.
